There's something rather satisfying about a proper British summer. One day you're reaching for a light jumper, the next you're wondering how it's suddenly 28 degrees. Whatever the weather decides to do, dressing well in the heat is less about following fashion and more about choosing clothes that are comfortable, practical and made to last.
Linen has long been the fabric of choice when temperatures climb, and for good reason. A well-made linen shirt feels cool against the skin, allows air to circulate and somehow manages to look relaxed without appearing scruffy. It does crease, of course, but that's part of its appeal. Like a favourite leather chair or a well-read novel, linen develops character with wear rather than losing it.

For those occasions when shorts won't quite do but a traditional suit feels a little too formal, seersucker comes into its own. Its distinctive puckered texture keeps the fabric away from the skin, allowing air to move more freely and making it surprisingly comfortable on warmer days. Worn as a complete two-piece suit, it's ideal for summer weddings, garden parties or lunch in town. Separately, the jacket works beautifully with chinos, while the trousers pair effortlessly with a linen shirt or lightweight knit.

Then there are chinos, one of the hardest-working garments in any gentleman's wardrobe. Smart enough for dinner, relaxed enough for a weekend away, they're the sort of trousers that quietly earn their place year after year. In lighter shades such as stone, sand or sage, they seem perfectly at home throughout the summer months.
A Panama hat is another classic that has never really gone out of style. Beyond keeping the sun off your face, it has an elegance that feels more considered than fashionable. Like all good accessories, it complements an outfit without demanding attention.

And yes, there are days when only shorts will do. The trick is finding a length that feels comfortable and proportionate. We've noticed more gentlemen asking for a slightly shorter fit, so our tailored shorts can now be made with an inside leg around two inches shorter than our standard 9–9½ inches. It's a subtle adjustment, but one that creates a cleaner, more contemporary silhouette while remaining smart enough for everything from a walk along the seafront to an afternoon in the garden.
Perhaps the best thing about summer dressing is its simplicity. A handful of well-made pieces in breathable fabrics will see you through almost every occasion, without the need for an overflowing wardrobe. When clothes are chosen for their quality rather than the season's latest trend, they become old favourites rather than last year's purchases, and that's a far more satisfying way to dress.
